Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan for Serious, Specific, and Strategic Prayer
Written by: Priscilla Shirer
Publisher: B&H Publishing Group
Month, Year: August, 2015

A brief summary from the publisher, B&H Publishing Group:

You have an enemy . . . and he’s dead set on destroying all you hold dear and keeping you from experiencing abundant life in Christ. What’s more, his approach to disrupting your life and discrediting your faith isn’t general or generic, not a one-size-fits-all. It’s specific. Personalized. Targeted.

So this book is your chance to strike back. With prayer. With a weapon that really works. Each chapter will guide you in crafting prayer strategies that hit the enemy where it hurts, letting him know you’re on to him and that you won’t back down. Because with every new strategy you build, you’re turning the fiercest battles of life into precise strikes against him and his handiwork, each one infused with the power of God’s Spirit.

It has taken me four months to read Fervent from cover to cover. Not because the writing was over-the-top or hard to understand – it was easy, relatable, and Priscilla Shirer opened up with a Lord of the Rings quote (excited nerd moment over here!). No, it has taken me four months to read this little 190 page book because every page has hit home in my heart, and my human nature has fought the truth in a waging battle throughout the whole process.  This book could not have come into my life at a better time – praise Jesus for how he works and opens doors for this book to be the one I was able to review!

Priscilla starts off letting the reader (you/me) know that we are in a war. A war we are meant to win with Christ. It’s a call to battle and prayer — and prayer is to be our weapon of choice.

This is war. The fight of your life. A very real enemy has been strategizing and scheming against you, assaulting you, coming after your emotions, your mind…your future. In fact, he’s doing it right this second. Right where you’re sitting. Right where you are. – Page 2

In Fervent, Shirer lists out what she believes are the most common 10 strategies the enemy, Satan, uses against us to distract us from prayer, to distract us from Christ:

Your Passion: Getting It Back When It’s Gone
Your Focus: Fighting the Real Enemy
Your Identity: Remembering Who You Are
Your Family: Fortifying the Lives of Those You Love
Your Past: Ending the Reign of Guilt, Shame, and Regret
Your Fears: Confronting Your Worries, Claiming Your Calling
Your Purity: Staying Strong in Your Most Susceptible Places
Your Pressures: Reclaiming Peace, Rest, and Contentment
Your Hurts: Turning Bitterness to Forgiveness
Your Relationships: Uniting in a Common Cause

For me, some chapters hit home more than others, more specifically, the chapters on passion, past, and fears. These three strategies are things I’ve been struggling with for years, the main one being fear.

If the only reason you aren’t moving forward is fear, then don’t you see that the enemy is trying to paralyze you? He’s the one behind this (the fear). Don’t sit there and let him do that. Don’t let him stop you from moving forward. I don’t care how afraid or not ready you may feel. Obey God anyway! – Page 108

This blurb wedged its way into my heart and into my personal journal: Obey God anyway.

When you’re worried about what others may think of you. Obey God anyway.
When you’re too scared to get out of your comfort zone. Obey God anyway.
When you question if it’s a smart move to leave a job without another lined up? Obey God anyway.
When your bank account is so low that you’re running on fumes but your heart says to give more than you can imagine parting with. Obey God anyway.
When you want to go from zero to sixty, but are being called to have patience. Obey God anyway.

It all comes down to obeying God. But how can you obey God if you never spend time with him, never listen to him, never speak to him?  Fervent is a call to prayer. It is not a how-to pray book, but more of a wake-up call to acknowledging your prayer life, opening your eyes to the areas in your life that the enemy is striking against you hardcore, and a strategy to re-focus on Christ through prayer.

Make prayer both your lifeline and your lifestyle. – Page 174
