Janine Mendenhall teaches teens English, of all things! Sometimes she sleeps, but most nights she reads, writes, or watches movies like Pride and Prejudice and claims she’s researching her next book. Splickety Love and Splickety Prime have published her flash fiction. She and her husband, Tom, live in North Carolina where they and their two golden retrievers help gratify the needs of their five children and two cats.
A brief summary from Janine Mendenhall:
Since her assault, Miss Annette Chetwynd has been plagued by nightmares and worries about an arranged marriage. But she yearns to find her anonymous rescuer. Unfortunately, her health and intellect prevent it. Both repel suitors and cause Annette to doubt God’s existence, at least until He answers her prayers in an unusual way …
Mr. Peter Adsley is joining the clergy, and he desires a godly wife by his side. After his failed attempt to obtain one, he engages in a clandestine meeting with the bewitching young woman who keeps crossing his path. But she is so unsettling.
Destined for disappointments, Peter and Annette endure disgraceful situations. Will Peter’s faith sustain him through overwhelming setbacks? Can Annette overcome her doubts? Or will their starving hearts yield to the machinations of a mad man?
I don’t know where to even begin on my review of Starving Hearts!! I loved reading Janine Mendenhall’s debut novel!! What’s not to love – 18th century England (helllloooo Jane Austin!!!), a darling heroine and dashing hero (*wave* to Annette and Peter!!), a tremendous amount of depth and insight into the terrors of slave trading, and the glory of God’s redemptive power!! *sigh* I love love LOVE Starving Hearts!!
Immediately, my attention was grabbed as the story opened with Annette Chetwynd being assaulted in a church. During the haze of terror, Annette suddenly finds herself rescued and returned to her family. As she heals from the rogue’s assault, she fuzzily remembers someone saving her life, but can’t make out definitive facial features. Who is the mystery man? A guardian angel? A local passerby? And will she ever be able to thank him for saving her life?
Up-and-coming preacher, Peter Adsley, is on a mission to find himself a wife (God-willing) and save souls. But his family has other plans for his life as a second son. The more he tries to do what he believes is right, the further away he is pulled from all that is familiar. Matters become even more confusing when he meets Annette, a gorgeous, vivacious woman who’s heart for people, including slaves being sold in the hundreds, is a fragrant balm to Peter’s mind. But does she have a heart for the Lord? Or, is everything she says and does only learned knowledge with no driving force behind her goodwill?
As Annette and Peter’s lives intertwine, each must learn to depend on God to be sovereign through all circumstances.
