A brief summary from Kim Vogel Sawyer:
The Kansas community of Fairland anticipates the arrival of their new minister and in recent months, late in 1882, postmistress Grace Cristler has communicated with Reverend Dille via letters, answering his questions about the little town, and developing affection for the man who pens thoughtful missives.
Theophil Garrison grew up under the loving influence of his saintly grandmother, but was roped into his cousins’ train-robbing plan. When they fail and are apprehended, Theo fled the scene, evading jail time. Now an angry cousin is out to avenge Theo’s duplicity, and he’s on the run. He encounters a fatally ill traveler–a minister. Seeing a way to keep hidden, Theo trades identities with the man, dons his fine black suit, carries a Bible, and prays that he’ll be accepted as Rufus Dille.
Once in Fairland, if Theo’s true identity is uncovered, what will be left of the world he has built for himself, Grace, and those in the town who have come to love and accept him?
Ever the tender heart, twenty-four year old Grace Cristler has all but settled on the idea that she will never marry due to lack of eligible men in her small town. She focuses on her duties as postmistress and aiding her uncle in his pastoral duties to the town. But when her uncle decides to retire, Grace finds herself exchanging many a letter with the future, and much younger, preacher, Reverend Rufus Dille, coming to replace her uncle. With each letter, Grace’s heart flutters in anticipation of Rufus’ arrival. Will he be the one to set her free from this unseemly singleness plaguing Grace?
After a heist goes wrong, Theophil Garrison goes on the run to flee his cousins and their impending revenge. While on the run, Theo stumbles upon a little town eagerly waiting the arrival of their future minister – a minister he assumes the role of to throw his cousins off his trail. Yet, the more Theo engages with the town, the harder it is lying to these kind folk, strangers who showered him with acceptance and love. Will Theo ever find peace and set himself free of the lies, or will they haunt him for the rest of his life?
With unsuspecting sweetness and mystery, Kim Vogel Sawyer’s Grace and the Preacher is a refreshing historical romance sure to leave readers sighing in awe. I really enjoyed meeting these characters. Grace is so kind and strong in her faith while Theo’s dilemma on his convictions made them both so relatable. And I know just how much we all LOVE relatable characters! 🙂
